A 1929 Gibson Style 5 Deluxe tenor banjo in very good condition. It has the fiddle-cut peghead, wreath inlay, gold plating with a little engraving (Deluxe on tailpiece) gold celluloid binding and suspended pickguard, wood marquetry purflings, 40 hole archtop tone ring, tube and plate 2-piece flange, inlayed wood marquetry on the back of the peghead in a decorative floral pattern (original) and 2-ring walnut resonator. Research has determined this is a 1929 Style 5 Mastertone. (Ralph Stanley played one of these with an extra string.) Walnut neck and resonator. (Lots of nice curl in the wood of the resonator too.) The Style 5 Deluxe is a fancy banjo, and at a time when a Ford Model T cost $ 360, its original sales price of $ 250 put it near the top end of Gibson’s banjo line. Includes the original hardshell case.
