Introductory Jazz for Rock and Blues Guitarists - Tuesday, February 11 - 6:30pm - 8pm

Lots of guitarists are intimidated by jazz - Maj7Demented chords, reading sheet music, modes of the major scale. This workshop will demystify the world of jazz guitar by taking rock/blues guitar skills and using them to throw back the curtain of jazz guitar. If you know the A minor pentatonic and the A7 chord, you have all you need to begin comping and improvising, whether you're brand new to jazz or would like insight into expanding your existing skill set. Harmonic generalization, shell voicings, basic comping rhythms, and modular forms within the CAGED system will be emphasized.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: Better for intermediate to advanced players but no specific jazz experience required.
Requirements: Knowledge of A Minor pentatonic and the A7 chord.
Instructor: Steve Knight
Instructor Bio: Steve Knight traded his skateboard for a Synsonics/JCPenney guitar (with built-in, 9 volt-powered speaker) in the early 90s, much to the delight of his mother. At Emporia State University, he split his time between the theatre department and the music department, playing in pit orchestras, the big band, and the faculty combo, all the while teaching guitar at ESU Academy and Flint Hills Music. Steve's first step into the professional jazz world came in the living room of noted jazz pedagogue, author, and guitarist Dr. Wayne Goins at Kansas State University. Wayne's unique approach as a professional first, academic second, inspired Steve to pursue the music further by moving to New York where he was lucky to study with luminaries in the field like Jack Wilkins, Mark Whitfield, Peter Bernstein, Mark Sherman, and Jim Ridl. Steve moved to Chicago in the spring of 2016 and began teaching and playing full time, further refining his craft with the help of local jazz heavies Scott Hesse, Jim Trompeter, Ernie Adams, and Henry Johnson. His album Persistence (2022) garnered 4 stars and was named one of the Best Albums of the Year in Downbeat Magazine. Steve plays Benedetto and Collings guitars and Henriksen and Fender amps.
