Our modern equal-tempered 12-note tuning system is a compromise. It was adopted grudgingly in a long and painful historical process as western compositional ambitions started to run afoul of the natural overtone series. Added to its compromises and imperfections are the guitar’s own unfixable deviations from theoretical physical ideals. The guitar player who wants to be in tune, or maybe least out of tune, in any given circumstance has some work to do to strike the best balance, and electronic tuners can’t tell us everything we need to know. This workshop will aim briefly to discuss the range of theoretical concerns relevant to tuning, and some practical approaches to getting a good result. All skill levels welcome!
