Happy Holidays, Everyone!
There's still time to get a little something for your favorite musician!
Contrary to our email sale flyer, our X-mas Eve & New Year's Eve hours are from 10:00am-4:00pm, although we may stay open a little bit later if beer and/or whiskey should show up...
Thanks to everyone who came out to our Holiday Concert with Ambassadors to Earth-- it was the biggest and best so far! And also many, many thanks who brought donations for the Chicago Food Depository!
Have you ever listened to an old Howlin' Wolf or Little Walter CHESS recording
and wondered, "HOW did they get that TONE?"
Chances are the guitarist (likely the recently departed Hubert Sumlin) or Walter were playing through a small, low wattage amp cranked to 10, thus causing the pre-amp AND power tubes to overdrive- resulting in that sweet, gritty distortion that guitarists (in an attempt to re-create said tone) spend hundreds of dollars on boutique pedals, or hand-wired point-to-point amps.
The point to all this is that we at Guitar Works have recently acquired a
rather stunning collection of just such amplifiers-National, Oahu, Danelectro,
Airline, Harmony- some have Tube Tremolo/Vibrato built-in (WAY better than any
pedal you have tried) and most are in the 5-15 watt range, thus enabling you to recreate that much-sought after tube tone.
ALSO new at Guitar Works are an equally fabulous collection of awesome guitars from the 50s and 60s- Harmony, Kay, Goya amongst them- that must be experienced. These things produce a tone that cannot be gotten on today's modern guitars- a lively, twangy vibe that makes one want to compose a new surf anthem immediately. Many are hollow-body guitars, which of course has a LOT to do with their great tone.
Plug one of these guitars into the above-mentioned amps, and the result is
Tone Heaven !!!
Come on in and try out a few !!!
We also just got in a large amount of used/vintage microphones and what feels like a ton of old rack gear.
We have been checking these things in and have uploaded many pictures to our website and Facebook, with more to come. If you would like to see this gear up close stop by the store and we will give you a personal tour.
